- Exam on 13 December 2026 or later? Prepare for HSK 3.0.
What Is Changing with HSK 3.0?
The new HSK framework aims to better reflect real-world Chinese language use and introduces several important updates.
HSK 3.0 focuses on broader language proficiency
Vocabulary requirements increase significantly across all levels, with a stronger emphasis on practical and contemporary Chinese used in everyday life.
Expanded Vocabulary Requirements
One of the most notable changes is the increase in required vocabulary across all levels. Students are expected to master significantly more words than under the current system.
| Level | HSK 2.0 | HSK 3.0 |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 150 words | 300 words |
| HSK 2 | 300 words | 500 words |
| HSK 3 | 600 words | 1,000 words |
| HSK 4 | 1,200 words | 2,000 words |
| HSK 5 | 2,500 words | 3,600 words |
| HSK 6 | 5,000+ words | 5,400 words |
In addition to the higher word count, the updated vocabulary lists include more practical and contemporary terms commonly used in everyday life, such as 网购 (wǎnggòu, online shopping) and 点赞 (diǎnzàn, to like or give a thumbs-up).
Important change for HSK 2 candidates
Under HSK 3.0, writing tasks become part of the exam from HSK 2 onwards. Candidates who previously did not have a writing component at this level will now need to prepare for one.
Writing Begins at HSK 2
Under the current HSK 2.0 system, writing tasks are introduced at HSK 3. With HSK 3.0, writing becomes part of the exam from HSK 2 onwards.
This means that candidates taking HSK 2 under the new system will need to prepare for a writing component, which was previously not required at this level.
Fewer Questions and Shorter Exam Duration
Although vocabulary requirements increase, the higher-level exams contain fewer questions than before. This results in shorter overall exam times.
| Level | HSK 2.0 | HSK 3.0 |
|---|---|---|
| HSK 3 | 80 questions | 70 questions |
| HSK 4 | 100 questions | 70 questions |
| HSK 5 | 100 questions | 72 questions |
| HSK 6 | 101 questions | 82 questions |
For example, the HSK 4 examination is reduced from approximately 105 minutes to around 85 minutes.
Updated Listening Tasks
The listening section has also been revised. Audio materials have been adapted to better reflect the pace, style, and characteristics of Chinese as it is used in everyday communication, helping learners develop practical listening skills for real-life situations.
