The word <strong>&#8220;\u522b&#8221;<\/strong> is one of the first and most practical grammar points for Mandarin learners. By understanding its structure, tone, and usage in different contexts, you can confidently use it to give polite reminders, issue firm warnings, or stop unwanted actions. It works similarly to the English word <strong>\u201cdon\u2019t\u201d<\/strong> and is one of the simplest ways to express <strong>what someone should not do<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The basic structure of a sentence using <strong>&#8220;\u522b&#8221;<\/strong> is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u522b + Verb (+ Object)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This structure is straightforward and one of the easiest ways to form negative commands in Chinese.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u522b<\/strong>: This is the key word that translates to &#8220;don\u2019t.&#8221; It tells the listener not to perform an action.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Verb<\/strong>: The action that the speaker wants to prohibit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>(+ Object)<\/strong>: This is optional. If the action involves something or someone (an object), you can include it after the verb.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u522b\u8bf4\u8bdd\uff01<\/strong> (<em>bi\u00e9 shu\u014d hu\u00e0<\/em>) \u2014 Don\u2019t talk!\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u522b<\/strong> negates the action <strong>\u8bf4\u8bdd<\/strong> (<em>shu\u014d hu\u00e0<\/em>), which means &#8220;to speak.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u522b\u544a\u8bc9\u4ed6\u4eec\uff01<\/strong> (<em>bi\u00e9 g\u00e0o s\u00f9 t\u0101 men!<\/em>) \u2014<strong> Don\u2019t tell them!<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u522b<\/strong> negates the action <strong>\u544a\u8bc9<\/strong> (<em>g\u00e0o s\u00f9<\/em>), which means &#8220;to tell.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u4ed6\u4eec<\/strong> (<em>t\u0101 men<\/em>): &#8220;Them&#8221; \u2014 the object, referring to the people you don\u2019t want the speaker to tell.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u522b\u62d6\u5230\u6700\u540e\u51c6\u5907\uff0c\u4f1a\u8ba9\u4f60\u7d27\u5f20\u3002<\/strong> (<em>Bi\u00e9 tu\u014d d\u00e0o zu\u00ech\u00f2u zh\u01d4nb\u00e8i, hu\u00ec r\u00e0ng n\u01d0 j\u01d0nzh\u0101ng.<\/em>) \u2014 Don\u2019t wait until the last moment to prepare; it will stress you out.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u522b<\/strong> negates the action <strong>\u62d6<\/strong>\u00a0(<em>tu\u014d <\/em>), which means &#8220;to delay &#8220;<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u6700\u540e\u51c6\u5907<\/strong> (<em>zu\u00ech\u00f2u zhunb\u00e8i<\/em>): &#8220;last moment preparation&#8221; \u2014 the object<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now that you know how to use <strong>&#8220;\u522b&#8221;<\/strong>, try practicing it in your conversations!
